Simple Ways To Extend The Lifespan Of Your Home's Air Conditioning System

by Feride Halma

Replacing an air conditioning system costs thousands of dollars, so it is no surprise that the majority of homeowners want their air conditioner to last for as long as possible. While all air conditioners will eventually fail due to age and wear and tear, there are measures that you can take that can add years to your air conditioner's lifespan. The good news is the fact that the steps to make you air conditioning system last longer are not difficult or costly. Use the following tips to get as many years as possible from your home's air conditioning system:

Have Your Air Conditioner Regularly Serviced by an HVAC Professional

One of the biggest keys to making your home's air conditioning system last longer is having your air conditioner serviced by an HVAC professional on an annual basis. When you have your air conditioning system serviced, it will be thoroughly inspected and cleaned and necessary parts will be lubricated. During your AC service, small issues will also be identified so you can have repairs made before big problems develop. A good rule of thumb is to schedule your annual air conditioning service in the spring before you begin using your air conditioner regularly in the summer months.

Invest in a Programmable Thermostat

The more an air conditioner runs, the more wear and tear it will experience. Thus, if your goal is to extend the lifespan of your air conditioning system, it doesn't make sense for it to continually run when the house is empty. A simple way to reduce the amount of time that your air conditioner runs without sacrificing comfort is investing in a programmable thermostat. When you have a programmable thermostat, you can set the thermostat for a higher temperature during the day while no one is home and then program the thermostat to turn on before you return so your home is cool and comfortable when you walk in.

Stay on Top of Changing Your Air Filter

One of the easiest ways to make your air conditioner last longer is simply staying on top of changing your air filter. When the air filter is dirty and clogged, your air conditioner has to work much harder, which can put stress on the system. New air filters are very affordable, and the entire process of removing a dirty air filter and putting a new one in can be completed in just a couple of minutes.
